Based on secret information received the Forest Department from Tirupur division has arrested three people who attempted to sell two elephant tusks, 4 feet tall, worth Rs 80 lakhs
Tirupur: Three persons have been arrested for attempting to sell two elephant tusks worth Rs 80 lakhs in Tirupur.
Avinashiyappan, a native of Velliangadu in Tirupur is a load man and his friends Murugan and Veerappan work in hosiery companies. Reportedly, they got acquainted with a man from Kambam, who sent Avinashiyappan elephant tusks through bus, four days ago, asking them to sell it.Avinashiappan and two of his friends, who received it, attempted to sell the tusks.
Meanwhile, the Tirupur District Forest Range Officer Senthil Kumar received information about the sale of elephant tusks, and the special team plotted to catch the gang red-handed after they suspected Avinashiyappan of possessing the tusks.Forest Range Officer Senthil Kumar posed himself as a potential buyer. Avinashiyappan also brought the tusks to showcase after making a deal of Rs 80 lakhs.
The forest department arrested Avinashiyappan and his friends Veerappan and Murugan and seized two four-feet-tall elephant tusks and two two-wheelers from them.
The forest department has launched an investigation to nab the mysterious man from Kambam who fetched the trio the tusks. The team is also trying to determine if the pair of tusks were stolen poaching elephants or were they extracted from a dead elephant.
