Coimbatore: The corporation is making announcements on the loudspeakers urging the public to pay taxes.
Coimbatore Corporation earns revenue by collecting property tax, drinking water tax, industrial tax, vacancies tax and lease tax. Development works are being carried out using this source of revenue and through funds provided by the Central and State Governments.
The Tax Collection Centre is functioning at 21 places in Coimbatore Corporation and everyone comes and pays their taxes from 9 am to 5 pm. Since this year's closing financial year is on March 31, it has been announced that the centers will also be operational on Sunday, the government holiday.
Accordingly, the tax offices were open last week as well. However, corporation officials are engaged in cutting off the drinking water connection as a large number of people have not paid taxes.
The Corporation has been advertising through loudspeakers reminding the public to pay the taxes, street-by-street through garbage collection vehicles. This was followed by a large crowd at tax collection centers yesterday and today from 9 am. Server problems occurred at centers near Western Regional Office, Saibaba Colony.
People waited a long time to pay taxes due to staff shortage scarcity and server problems at Coimbatore Corporation tax collection centers. This led the working crowd, to return without paying taxes. The payment of taxes was delayed due to the operation of only one counters. Others had no choice but to wait in line, till the problem was sorted.
A corporation official said that there was a traffic jam as more people visited the office to pay taxes at the same time. He said there was a delay in the allocation of alternate staff at some centers as the staff was on emergency leave.
