The forest fire that broke out suddenly at Pandalur, Gudalur areas spread rapidly and a total of 500 acres went up in flames due to the fire caused in the Perumal Malai area in Kodaikanal.
Nilgiris:Several acres of land were damaged in the sudden forest fires in Pandalur, Nilgiris.
A forest fire in the Nilgiris yesterday destroyed several acres of forest area. A fire broke out in the Pandalur-Kozhikode roadside forest on Sunday, and the forest department and the tea plantation workers put out the fire after four hours of struggle.
Forest fires also broke out in the forest area adjacent to the Government Arts College campus at Amaikulam in Gudalur yesterday, 13th morning. Anti-poaching police and youth in the area controlled the fire.
The forest department said, "The fire has burnt down several acres of forest and damaged the species of plants.”
They added that the forest fire at Kodaikanal Perumal hills spread over 500 acres and field workers have been fighting to control the fire for the past two days. “So far, no human or animal have been reported affected. Forest fires broke out at 114 places in a single day yesterday.”
In Kodaikanal, forest fires have occurred at 52 places. The forest department has thus advised restricting tourists visiting the forest regions. The forest department added that the forest areas of Pandalur and Gudalur in Nilgiris district are in a drought, taking advantage of which the smugglers set the forest in fire and the public, should immediately inform the forest department on those involved in the crime.
