Tirupur:Farmers and other customers who were cheated of money by the jewellery appraiser at the State Bank of India in Palladam have demanded action and redemption of their jewellery.
The Nationalised State Bank of India branch is functioning at Kethanur next to Palladam in Tirupur district. Sudha of Coimbatore is the branch manager and Shekhar of Tirupur is the jewellery assessor. Framers from Kethanur and surrounding areas have accounts at the branch.
Shekhar, had reportedly been asking for the copies of the customer’s Chitta, Aadhar Card, who approach for a gold loan and promised to avail loan at a lower interest, getting their jewellery. Many customers who wanted a loan, believed it reportedly handed over the jewellery to him and went to their homes to get the documents requested by the assessor and get the jewellery loan.
The customers however found a difference in the weight of the jewellery when they purchased at the stores and the numbers mentioned in the loan cards. Suspicious, the customers, majorly farmers from various areas including Jallikattu, Vavipalayam, Mandipalayam, Kollampalayam, and Kethanur visited the Kethanur bank branch and questioned the branch manager and officials about it.
Caught in the confusion, Shekhar, admitted to stealing smaller portions of the jewellery pawned by the customers and making money off it. Shekhar also vouched to returning the laundered amount to the customers and apologized stating that this was a mistake.
Meanwhile, more than 20 loan customers who availed jewellery loan from Jallikattu, Vavipalayam area gathered in front of the bank after reports of the theft by jewellery appraiser spread. The Kamanaickenpalayam police rushed to the spot and questioned the bank manager and Shekhar on the issue and also staged a protest demanding the arrest of Shekhar.
The victims also demanded that their lost jewellery be recovered. They dispersed peacefully after the police assured them to take appropriate action. The police probed whether Shekhar was involved alone or had the bank employees involved. Investigation in this regard is underway.
