A special squad went on a vehicle search at Pollachi-Palakkad road on Thursday, 10th March, after the District SP received a secret tip-off on banned tobacco products being smuggled and arrested a goods auto driver for transporting 400 kg of tobacco products worth 3 lakhs.
Pollachi: A goods auto rickshaw driver was arrested for attempting to sneak banned tobacco items, Gutkha and Pan Masala to Kerala.
Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police, Selvanagarathinam received a tip-off stating gutkha and pan masala were being smuggled in Pollachi-Palakkad Road using goods auto rickshaw. On his orders, the SP's special squad conducted a vehicle search on Pollachi Palakkad Road yesterday.
One of the drivers of a goods vehicle was stopped and interrogated and he gave contradictory replies. The police officers continued to search the vehicle suspicious of his answers and found that there were bags of banned tobacco products inside.
The police seized 400 kg of tobacco products worth Rs.3 lakh and arrested the driver, Jawahar aka Sabarigirisan of Malumichampatti, Coimbatore.
He was subsequently handed over to the Western Police Station police.
Subsequently, the police registered a case against him and continued to investigate and found that an attempt was made to smuggle tobacco products to Kerala. Investigation is underway.
