Coimbatore: Cinema halls across Tamil Nadu which had been shut for the past three months due to Covid-19 second wave are all geared up to resume.
Last Saturday, the Tamil Nadu Government had granted permission for reopening of cinema halls with restrictions.
Accordingly, theatre owners and staff in Coimbatore have been diligently disinfecting and cleaning seats, as well as marking seats in adherence to social distancing norms for movie-goers.
According to Balasubramaniam, owner of Baba Complex Theater in Coimbatore, theatres have been closed in Coimbatore for 18 months since last year due to Coronavirus.Due to the spread of the second wave, they had been closed for the last three months and have suffered losses to the tune of crores of rupees. "Owners of the theatres were waiting for the permission of the Government. Now that we have the permission, we are engaged in the task of cleaning the entire theatre with the staff as per the order of the Government.
Movie-goers will now have to strictly adhere to Covid-19 preventive measures such as wearing face masks, following social distancing and be certified as vaccinated. The cinema halls ticket prices will not be increased and all Covid-19 norms advised by the government will be fully complied with. Theatre owners who have suffered losses due to the spread of the pandemic should be exempted from taxes, including the newly imposed tax and entertainment tax being levied by the Tamil Nadu Government.
