Officials halt over 100 vehicles in Bodimettu area demanding complete vaccination certificate to enter Kerala; Daily laboureres commuting to Idukki worst hit
Coimbatore: With reports of the third wave of Covid-19 having hit Kerala, the Tamil Nadu Government has increased restrictions in various parts of the State, including Walayar on the Kerala border.
Following this, over a hundred vehicles en route to Kerala were stopped at the Bodimettu check post on the Kerala border in Theni district on Friday morning and refused entry itno Kerala.
Passengers in Theni district were caught unawares when informed that they had to have a vaccination certificate that confirmed they had been administered two doses of vaccination against Covid-19. Hundreds of vehicles have been halted at the Bodimettu check post on the border of Theni district and made to wait in long queues. Officials were checking each vehicle's passengers at the check post for complete vaccination certificates to allow entry into Kerala. Thousands of daily wage labourers travel to Idukki in Kerala daily on the three routes of Bodimettu, Kambammedu and Kumizhi and return to their homes in the evening.
It has been reported that those who had been vaccinated with the first dose of vaccine were earlier allowed to enter Kerala but officials felt that this could have also been instrumental in the spread of Covid-19 in the state. On Thursday morning, entry was denied to all Tamil Nadu vehicles unless the complete vaccination certificate was produced.
Various parties have appealed to the the Police and Health Departments of both states to hold talks to find a quick and effective solution in order to protect livelihoods.
