'An average of 200 new people are affected by Covid-19 infections daily in Coimbatore district. Herd immunity in Coimbatore is 43 percent. The Coronavirus resistance in Chennai is 78 percent. With only 43 percent resistance, Coimbatore is likely to be most affected by the third wave. Be prepared to face this. The third wave is expected to hit within a month. Public have been asked to wear face masks and avoid unnecessary travel. Curfew is currently in effect with relaxations and not a complete curfew. If this continues, there is a chance that complete curfew can be postponed and avoided.'
He added, 'Vaccination is the only way to increase the current immunity in Coimbatore from 43 percent. Steps have been taken to administer more vaccines in Coimbatore. Be extra careful as the third wave may come even in a single month. Additional beds have been prepared at Government Hospital and ESI Hospital in Coimbatore. These hospitals have adequate oxygen beds and ventilators. The number of beds can be increased in a week. Oxygen tanks will be shifted from Chennai to Coimbatore hospitals.
As precautionary measures have been taken in Coimbatore, we can face the third wave without much casualties. However, the public ought to be very careful for the next two months. This time, we are ready to face the Covid-19 third wave even if it hits children. The Government Hospital has 124 oxygen beds and 82 ICU beds ready for children. The ESI hospital has 40 oxygen beds and 30 ICU beds ready. Coimbatore also has adequate doctors to deal with Covid-related infections.'
