Tamil Nadu Physiotherapy Physicians Association welcomes the Tamil Nadu Government's 'Doorstep Healthcare Program
Coimbatore: For the first time in India, the Government of Tamil Nadu has launched a 'Doorstep Healthcare' program to provide home-based medicines, pills and treatments to patients, including those in need of treatment for diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and dialysis.
The project is aimed at preventing infectious diseases. Physiotherapy medicine plays an important role in this program.
State President of the Tamil Nadu Physiotherapy Physicians Association Dr. Raja Selvakumar and General Secretary Dr. Rajesh Kanna said in a joint statement:
"On behalf of the Tamil Nadu Physiotherapy Physicians Association, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, and to the Minister of Medicine and Public Welfare, M. Subramanian, for making physiotherapy available free of cost to the poor and rural people through the Doorstep Healthcare program. The program provides physiotherapy treatment for patients with bedridden paralysis, stroke, spinal cord injury, rheumatoid arthritis and children with congenital malformations such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy (Down syndrome).
They may need a long-term series of physiotherapy treatments, many on a monthly basis and some on a yearly basis. As a result, poor and rural people are forced to come to the hospital every day for treatment and are forced to live with disabilities for the rest of their lives. But with physiotherapy treatment available at home through this program they can continue to take physiotherapy treatment to the fullest. So they can be helped to create a disability-free life through physiotherapy treatment.
The Department of Health should take steps to ensure that physiotherapy physicians have the necessary equipment and vehicle facilities available for treatment at all times. The plan is to appoint a large number of physiotherapy doctors through the Medical Personnel Selection Board to reach out to the poor and rural people in all districts. We urge the health department of the Tamil Nadu Physiotherapy Physicians Association to implement this."
