Enact law to prevent honour killings: People’s Welfare Front

Members the People’s Welfare Front and other political outfits on Wednesday staged a protest here condemning the murder of Dalit youth V. Shankar and demanding a law to prevent honour killings.

In the protest staged in front of the Coimbatore South Taluk office, the protesters led by U.K. Sivagnanam, state general secretary, Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front, said that though there had been 81 honour killings in the State, the government was reluctant to enact a law.

Social networking sites

The new government should enact a law and also act against those who supported honour killings through their messages on social networking sites.

Protection

The government should also provide Shankar’s widow Kausalya protection and a government job Cadre from the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, Adi Tamilar Katchi, Dravidar Kazhagam, Devendra Kula Velalar, Dalit Viduthalai Katchi and others parties participated.

Students protest

A few students of the Government Law College, Coimbatore, also staged a protest on Avinashi Road. The city police removed around 30 students.
