Coimbatore: In a raid by the police based on a tip-off, 2 tonnes of ration rice was seized from two different places in Pollachi.
A complaint was received from Pollachi on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border that goods including ration rice were being smuggled to Kerala.
Following this, the police are conducting intensive raids on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border areas and in rural areas. East Police received information that ration rice was being smuggled in a car from the Pollachi Jothi Nagar area on Wednesday. Police officials rushed to the spot and seized a tonne of rice stored in a car parked on the road. Similarly, Anaimalai police seized a tonne of ration rice smuggled in a car while conducting a vehicle inspection near Ambarampalayam.
They also arrested Ajmal, a youth involved in smuggling ration rice to Kerala. Following this, the police handed over the ration rice bundles seized at Pollachi and Anaimalai police stations to the Food Smuggling Prevention Unit.
