Seroprevalence rate at 43% in Coimbatore, second least among the western districts
Coimbatore: "Seroprevalence rate is 43 percent in Coimbatore district," announced the Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine after concluding the Phase 3 cross-sectional sero survey taken in the month of July, to identify the presence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2.
Serological surveys shows the number of people who have antibodies against an infection. Of the 26,610 residents tested, only 17,624 had antibodies against Covid-19. The data from DPH on its Phase 3 trial also revealed that the seroprevalence in Virudhunagar district stands the highest with 84 percent. However, it also showed that western districts were with least seroprevalence rates. Erode, Tirupur, Coimbatore, Namakkal and Nagapattinam are districts that recorded seroprevalence below 50 percent. While Erode recorded the least seroprevalence rate of 37 percent, Coimbatore secured 43 percent, next only to Erode.
The never-ending spike in fresh cases in recent times in these districts, even when the State reported downward trends is the reason why the seroprevalence rate is around 45 percent, which was clarified in the data by the DPH. It also showed that as many as 33 districts recorded 50 percent of seroprevalence in the third phase as opposed to below 50 percent in the last two surveys conducted. Chennai, while witnessing spike in cases after seeing deterioration in terms of fresh cases recorded 82 percent, the second highest seroprevalence in the State. Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Theni, Tenkasi and Tirunelveli recorded a range of 70 percent seroprevalence.
Overall, the state recorded 66.2 percent seropositivity rate in the Phase 3 sero survey conducted.
