Lion-tailed macaques enter houses in Valparai and cause nuisance in residential areas.
Coimbatore: The Puthuthottam tea estate adjoining the town of Valparai in Coimbatore district is home to a rare species of the lion-tailed macaque. Over a 100 lion-tailed macaques roam the town of Valparai and reportedly are from the Puthuthottam Tea estate forest. The macaques have been invading homes in Kamaraj Nagar, Gaggan Colony, Cooperative Colony and the Vazhaithottam area, eating and destroying food items in the kitchen.
These macaques are known for flinging things in bakeries, tea shops and fruit stalls on the main road of Valparai and snatch fruits. They pounce and bite people when being chased away. Due to this, locals in Valparai have been gripped with fear. They have demanded thatot the Forest Department capture the lion-tailed macaques that are presently roaming Valparai and release them in the dense forest.
