Coimbatore: A youth who kidnapped a girl, married her and raped her has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. The judge issued a sensational verdict by issuing an arrest warrant to the youth for not appearing in court and also ordered the Government to pay Rs. 5 lakhs to the girl as compensation for her ordeal.
The verdict was handed on Wednesday in a case tried at the Coimbatore POCSO court.issuing an arrest warrant to the youth who did not appear in court. The 17-year old girl from Coimbatore was reported missing in a complaint filed at the Mettupalayam police station in 2019 by her parents.
Two weeks later, the girl was rescued by the police and interrogated. The girl said that she was sexually abused and also claimed to be married. Based on the girl's confession, the police arrested Karthik and filed a case under three sections, namely kidnapping, anti-child marriage law and POCSO. The case was heard in the Coimbatore POCSO Special Court on Wednesday, the trial concluded and a verdict handed down. Karthik was sentenced to 20 years in prison, fined Rs. 30,000 and was issued an arrest warrant by the Coimbatore POCSO court for failing to appear in person.
