Marginal increase in Covid-19 cases brakes Coimbatore’s bid to return to normalcy

Coimbatore’s bid to return to normalcy has been halted in its tracks with daily fresh Covid cases on the rise in the past few days. Fresh Covid cases across the state have started to increase marginally over the last few days and on Friday, Tamil Nadu reported 1,947 cases while Coimbatore is said to have contributed more to the rise.


Coimbatore: Coimbatore’s bid to return to normalcy has been halted in its tracks with daily fresh Covid cases on the rise in the past few days. Fresh Covid cases across the state have started to increase marginally over the last few days and on Friday, Tamil Nadu reported 1,947 cases while Coimbatore is said to have contributed more to the rise.

Industries functioning in the district is said to be the reason for the increase in cases. However, sources say that Sulur and Karamadai, the two areas with many industries are witnessing more cases than other areas in the district. The District administration and Health Department are tracking the cases in these two areas and working to bring down the case load. In a step toward this, the District administration had ordered the closure of over 80 percent shops by 5 pm on Monday. Meanwhile, the district administration had also announced additional restrictions which have been implemented from Tuesday.

'Meat and fish shops can remain open from 6 am to 2 pm, all TASMAC outlets will remain open from 10 am to 5 pm in the district,' announced the Coimbatore District Collector, G S Sameeran close ont he heels of the Chief Minister, M K Stalin's order that stated, 'If crowds are seen in specific localities frequently, the Collectors have been instructed to take action.' Besides this, check posts connecting Kerala border in the district is also under surveillance of Health Department officials and district administration to contain the spread.

Officials are on the ground checking people who are entering Coimbatore from Kerala. People entering Coimbatore are being checked for complete vaccination certificates or recently taken RT-PCR test that is negative. However, passengers from State Government buses and those who walk through the border are not being checked by the officials.
