Coimbatore: About 450 to 600 tonnes of garbage is being cleared daily from the Coimbatore Vellalore landfill by bio-mining, a corporation official said.

There are 100 wards in Coimbatore Corporation. These wards collect 800 to 1,000 tons of garbage daily. All this garbage is dumped in a corporation-owned 650-acre landfill in Vellalore. In one part of the landfill, 9 lakh metric tons of unsorted garbage is stored in an area of 60 acres.

The debris caused a strong stench in the area and the infestation of flies was high. The corporation administration decided to destroy this waste by bio-mining. For this, a project of Rs. 60 crore has been allotted and is being implemented by a private organization. A team led by Anna University Professor Kurien Joseph came last year to measure the total amount of garbage piled up at the Vellalore landfill and what kind of garbage was piled up.

They were involved in measuring the accumulated debris with the help of modern cameras and technology fitted to the drone camera. In addition, a report on the study has been prepared and work is underway to clear the waste through bio-mining. This reduces the amount of accumulated debris.

Corporation officials said "450 to 600 tonnes of garbage is being cleared daily from the Vellalore landfill through bio-mining. Removal of stagnant debris is ongoing. The reduction in the amount of garbage has reduced the risk of fire at the Vellalore landfill."
