40 cents reserve site of Corporation on Trichy Road encroached for over 30 years; Social activists complain a wedding dining hall has been built at site and urge Corporation to reclaim site from encroacher.
Coimbatore: Social activists have complained that the Corporation-owned reserve site (meant for park) at Thirunagar Layout behind Central Studio on the Coimbatore-Trichy road, near Singanallur has been occupied for more than 30 years but not reclaimed till date even after a court order was passed in favour of the Corporation administration, three years ago.
Social activist Thiagarajan said, 'On the Coimbatore-Trichy road, near the Rajalakshmi Mills bus stop, behind the Central Studio, there is a 40 cent reserve site (park) owned by the Coimbatore Corporation at Thirunagar Layout which has been occupied by a nearby wedding hall for more than 30 years. Our investigation into the complaint has revealed that the place had been encroached upon and a wedding dining hall had been built and functional for many years.'

He further added, 'The case was filed in the Coimbatore Third Additional District Court in 2017. In 2018, the verdict was given in favor of the Corporation administration. Three years after the verdict, the site remains unoccupied. The wedding hall management has been spearheading substantial revenue for many years by publicly occupying the space owned by the Corporation. The encroachment is found in the 63rd ward of the Coimbatore Corporation East Zone. In the list of approved layout details released by the Corporation of Coimbatore, this area which is classified as a park has been declared as Open Space till date. The Corporation administration should take immediate action to reclaim the multi-crore rupees worth of Corporation-owned land near Singanallur, from the grip of the encroacher and set up a park in the area. This will greatly benefit the residents in the surrounding areas. We expect the Corporation administration to act quickly,' he added.
