Tirupur: Contracting companies have launched an indefinite strike to demand a pay rise.

Powertable owners have started an indefinite strike from today demanding a pay hike for small companies that sew knitwear on a contract basis with big hosiery companies in Tirupur.

More than 2,000 small companies have gone on strike, demanding an immediate renewal of the agreement, which expired four years ago in October 2020. As a result, 1 lakh 50 thousand workers working in these companies have lost their jobs. In addition, the production of hosiery fabrics up to Rs. 5 crore per day has been affected.

Every time a wage hike agreement is negotiated by SEIMA, the South Indian Hosiery Manufacturers Association. It is alleged that the contract was not negotiated due to the coronavirus curfew. The Powertable Owners' Association has announced the strike, demanding an interim 20 percent wage increase for reasons including bonuses for workers and rising prices as Diwali approaches next.
