Siruthuli plants 5000 Tree Saplings in remembrance of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on his Anniversary

Siruthuli Planted 5000 Tree Saplings in remembrance of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on his Anniversary at the Anna University Regional Campus

Coimbatore: Eminent environmental awareness and conservation group, Siruthuli, has tied up with RI Dist. 3201 Rotary Coimbatore Gaalaxy for a noteworthy Afforestation Project that aims to drive Dr APJ Abdul Kalam’sdream of a greener country forward on the 7th Anniversary of his unfortunate, early demise.

The project started on the 27th of July, 2021, at the Anna University Regional Campus, Coimbatore in the presence of Rtn. Rajasekhar Srinivasan, District Governor. While the collective project aims to plant 5000 trees on campus, Siruthuli has also sparked a Social Media Challenge to encourage netizens in the city to spread awareness along with taking action, through the ‘Plant4LifeChallenge’.

Taking inspiration from the man who lit the hearts of the country’s youth on fire with his vision and dream, Siruthuli is working towards bringing his aspiration of a billion trees for a billion people alive. With climate change currently ravaging the environment world over, this initiative is truly the need of the hour. The benefits of afforestation are numerous and intricately affect ecosystems. Tree covers act as sponges and even assuage and mitigate floods and rising water levels. Currently, the green cover in Tamil Nadu is only 17.59% (2017) as compared to the ideal cover of 33% required to effectively support life and the fragile ecosystem.

Urbanisation, pollution and rapid and irresponsible development are a few factors adding to the diminishing green cover and afforestation efforts need to be amped up to mitigate the damage. The Plant4Life Initiative is an ode to Dr. Kalam who had kicked off the afforestation efforts of Siruthuli during his Presidential tenure. Another interesting and fascinating fact is the increase in ground water levels around afforested regions, due to the natural water absorbing and retaining properties of trees. This challenge hopes to increase the green cover to 20% in Coimbatore to accelerate the rate of rejuvenation in the State.

The Plant4Life challenge is a way to pay tribute to the man who was unanimously loved and continues to be an inspiration to all. The challenge is all-set to be planted on his Death Anniversary (27th July) and will keep growing until his Birth Date (15th October).

Here’s how to be a part of this imperative initiative:

1. Plant a sapling in your locality of choice.

2. Take a picture or a video to document the same.

3. Post it on your social media accounts and tag @siruthuli.

4. Use the hashtag #Plant4Life.

5. Nominate your friends, family and followers to take up the challenge.

It is also worth noting that precisely two years ago, Siruthuli had facilitated a Tree Planting Drive of a phenomenal 10,000 saplings by 5000 students in a record time of three minutes, in honour of Dr. Kalam, at Coimbatore’s reputed Bharathiar University. This was a significant event that honoured his love for children and belief in them growing towards a better future, his passion and perseverance towards conservation and nature and also his affiliation to the education system. The project has been a tremendous success and now boasts of its own thriving ecosystem of flora and fauna including wild boar, elephants, deer, peafowl and more that take respite in this lush haven. This could not have been possible without the support of ZF Wind Power, Bharathiar University & Anna University, along with Siruthuli, who have actively carried forward and encouraged this promising cause.
