Tourists from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and many other states visit Valparai with their families. Generally, tourists driving into Valparai stop at the 9th hairpin bend to see the Aliyar Dam. For the past two months, the Forest Department had not allowed tourists due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
But right after the announcement of some relaxations by the Tamil Nadu government, tourists have begun flocking Valparai. At the 9th hairpin bend viewpoint, tourists broke through the security gates set up by the Forest Department enraging social activists in the area. The Forest Department has now warned that tourists involved in such unruly behaviour will be fined and severely punished.
