Coimbatore: Prison officials have announced that inmates in Coimbatore have been allowed to do video call to talk to relatives during coronavirus lockdown.
Prisoners on trial are not currently admitted directly to Coimbatore Central Jail due to covid-19 pandemic. After being lodged in the sub jail for 15 days, they are then shifted to Coimbatore Central Jail. Also inmates infected due to coronavirus are prohibited from meeting their relatives and visitors. In response, central prison officials launched a program in late March last year to formally book and communicate with their families via video call on mobile phones.
More than 10 Android cell phones were allotted to Coimbatore Salem Central Jail. Inmates lodged in sub jails in the district were not allowed to make video calls with their relatives. The facility is currently being set up at the sub jail as well.
Prison officials said, 'Relatives of inmates at the District Branch Jail can visit the website eprisons.nic.in or download Vibyo app. One can apply by giving the details of the prison and prisoner details. Officers will review and send the link to their relatives to talk to the inmates on video call. You can click on that link and talk via video call. They said a prisoner would be given the opportunity to speak for half an hour once a week.'
