Coimbatore: The Sholayar Dam in Valparai, Coimbatore district is over 163 feet high. The southwest monsoon has intensified in Valparai and its surroundings. Due to this, it is raining heavily in Valparai area and in the catchment area of Sholayar Dam, Chinnakallar and Nirar Dam. All the rain water in the area goes to the Sholayar Dam through the Koozhangal River. As of 6 am today, 6000 cubic feet of water has gone to the Sholayar Dam. The 165-foot-high Sholayar Dam currently holds 163 feet of water. 5000 cubic feet of water is discharged through the saddle. 790 cubic feet of water goes for power generation.
Assuming the safety of the dam the shutter is opened and the excess water is discharged. Due to this the tea garden areas in Urulikkal area are surrounded by flood water. Tea plantations have been affected due to this. The public works department is actively monitoring the dam.
