Coimbatore: Hindu Makkal Katchi leader Arjun Sampath and many others were arrested by the police on Thadagam Road for protesting against the demolition of the Angalaparameswari temple situated near Muthannankulam.
The ancient Angala Parameswari temple at Muthannankulam on Coimbatore Thadagam Road was demolished for the Smart City project. Various Hindu organizations had condemned this and protested against the demolition.
As part of this, the Hindu Makkal Katchi leader, Arjun Sampath led a procession with the Angalamman idol and staged a road roko on Thadagam Road.
Speaking to reporters at the spot before his arrest, Arjun Sampath opined that they welcome the Smart City project and did not object to it. "But our spiritual sentiments have been hurt by the demolition of the ancient temple," he stated. Arjun Sampath also demanded that a small scale temple be rebuilt on the site of the demolished temple.
"Many people in the area were worried about the demolition of the temple, which for long has been a worshipping place for the poor and common people of the area," he added.
