No Concrete structures will be laid along lake/ponds in Tamil Nadu- Minister K N Nehru assures after study report from DMK Environmental Team.
Coimbatore: Today's announcment by the Minister of Urban Development, K N Nehru by putting an end to constructing concrete structures along the bunds, has instilled a ray of hope and respite to environmentalists across the State.
Responding to a joint comprehensive report submitted by the DMK's Environmental wing and environmentalists, on the degradation of water bodies in Coimbatore district due to building of concrete structures across the bunds, the Minister has informed that henceforth no concrete structures will be allowed to be constructed along the water bodies in Tamil Nadu.
Commending on the keenness of the state government followed by a swift action to protect the environment and bio-diversity, Karthikeya Suvasenapathy, Secretary of DMK's Environmental wing has thanked the CM, MK Stalin and Minister K N Nehru.
"This announcement is another feather in the cap for the DMK Government. As soon as we submitted the report to the Minister, he immediately called the Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner and inquired. It was followed by a consultative meeting, after which the Minister announced the decision of the Tamil Nadu Government to stop building concrete structures along the bunds of ponds and lakes", informed Mr.Karthikeya Sivasenapathy.
Expressing his heartfelt gratitude to the Chief Minister and Minister K N Nehru, he assured that the enviromental wing of DMK will closely keep a watch on unscientific activities that degrades the environment and bio-diversity.
"Constructing concrete structures along the pools, lakes and waterways pose a serious threat to the biodiversity. It directly affects various forms of life including birds (migratory and native)and insects, thereby paving way for irrecoverable degradation and imbalance in the ecosystem", he noted.
He added that with the help of NGOs working towards environment and rejuvenation of ponds, we inspected several water bodies in and around Coimbatore district and complied a comprehensive report stating the extent of degradation, due to construction of concrete structures along the bunds, in the name of beautification.
He assured that the announcement by the Minister against building concrete structures along water bodies will have a major impact in the coming days.
