Coimbatore: Parents of 13-year old Prithivi Raj from Coimbatore are sourcing funds for their son to undergo a heart transplant procedure.

The boy is diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy with severe biventricular dysfunction. It is a fatal disease of the heart muscles where they get dilated and without medical intervention, can cause heart failure and if left untreated can result in death of the patient.

Doctors who are treating the teenage boy at a city-based multi-speciality private hospital have informed that only a heart transplant procedure can save the boy.

Cost of the procedure is an estimated 25-lakhs. Parents of the boy are trying all means to arrange for the money as the team of medical experts have informed that the procedure needs to be performed on the boy at the earliest. Speaking to SimpliCity, Vijaya Kumar, father of the boy said “till date we have spent 7-lakhs towards treatment which includes hospital admission charges, medical test costs and for purchase of medicines. The biggest challenge for us is to arrange the huge sum of rupees 25-lakhs to save our son’s life.”

The family has started a campaign online to raise funds. As of this writing, funds towards the tune of 9 lakhs are collected. The family is hoping for a miracle to save the teenage boy. Second of the two children, the otherwise active and happy-go-lucky Prithivi is confined to his bed. He is artistic and very fond of the outdoors. However, his decorating health condition has made him extremely weak. The added regular hospital visits and tests have only dampened his spirits further. The boy who would otherwise be in class IX has discontinued his studies as advised by the doctors. Priority for the family is to somehow arrange for funds to save the boy.

“After almost a year of lockdown, in January this year, we decided to go to the famous Palani temple to pray for the family’s well-being. Prithivi Raj, my youngest son, climbed the hill on foot with the rest of us without any issue, just like always. A week later, he started coughing severely. Little did we know then that he was suffering from a life-threatening condition,” Vijaya Kumar said.

The boy’s parents took him to the family doctor, assuming that their son is suffering from congestion in his chest. “Only after taking the x-ray and echo tests, the doctor told us that there is some swelling in the left side of his heart and it is serious. From then, life has turned ugly for us. To make it worse, the past few weeks have been a nightmare. Prithivi has been vomiting profusely, and he has become so pale and weak,” Sharada, mother of the boy who is a homemaker said.

The blood group of the teenager is O positive. In order to undergo a heart transplant, on the all India wait list, the boy has only 5 patients ahead of him who are waiting for a donor. In the list of persons in the state waiting for a donor the teenager is in second or in third place, Prithivi’s father informed. “As soon as we collect funds, we will go ahead with the procedure,” Vijaya Kumar who works as a fabricator in a small factory said.

Contributions of any denotations can be sent via Google pay or Phone pay to Vijaya Kumar at 9080220145.
