Coimbatore: The Sholayar Dam is the main dam of the Parambikulam - Aliyar project in Valparai, Coimbatore district. It has been raining in Valparai area for the last two weeks due to the southwest monsoon.
The catchment area of Sholayar Dam is continuously receiving heavy rains in the upper Nirar and lower Nirar. Due to this the water level in the dam has increased and water level at the Sholayar Dam has risen 5 feet daily for the past one week and is at 152 feet this morning. As of 6 am today, 45 m rainfall in upper Nirar and 27 mm in Lower Nirar Dam, 30 mm rainfall in Sholayar Dam area and 31 mm rainfall was recorded in Valparai city.
The Sholayar Dam receives 2258.70 cubic feet of water. Powerhouse 1- 398.38 cubic feet of water per day for power generation from the dam. Power House 2 discharges 167.59 cubic feet and a total of 565.97 cubic feet of water is being discharged. The water level in the 165 feet high dam is 152.59 feet. The Koozhangal River, a catchment area of the Sholayar Dam, is flooded. The Sholayar Dam is expected to fill up soon as the rains continue in the Valparai area. The public works department is monitoring the dam.
