Coimbatore: 11,000 people have applied for a new ration card in Coimbatore district.
Coimbatore: 11,000 people have applied for a new ration card in Coimbatore district. There are currently 10,45,000 ration card holders in Coimbatore district.
The number of applicants for new ration cards has been increasing significantly. Newly-printed smart ration cards were distributed to the public last January. Thereafter, as the Assembly election procedures began in February, the Revenue Department staff was unable to take action on the applications of those who applied for the new ration card.
When the new Government took charge in May and all the election procedures came to an end due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it became impossible for door-to-door review of applications. Currently, the Revenue Department is actively involved in the process of reviewing new applications since Covid-19 cases had declined.
A Civil Supply Department official said, "We were not able to process applications of those who had applied for a new ration card due to elections and fear of Covid-19. Currently, applications are being reviewed on a daily basis following a decrease in cases. Also, since the Government of Tamil Nadu has been advised to take appropriate action on the petitions for new ration cards and issue smart cards within 15 days, all applications will be considered by the end of this month and new ration cards will be printed and distributed to the public from the beginning of next month."
Smart cards were issued to 12,800 people during last January. Therefore, new ration cards will be issued soon to all eligible applicants.
