The case was filed in the Chennai High Court on behalf of the RS Bharathi on behalf of the DMK, while Jayaram Venkatesh, on behalf of the Arappor Iyakkam, sought an order from the then State Home Department to set up a special inquiry committee into alleged irregularities in the Chennai and Coimbatore Corporation tenders. Preliminary inquiries into the allegations against then-ruling AIADMK minister SP Velumani are over.
The then AIADMK government said that there was no indication of malpractice in the investigation report and that the case should be closed. Although the preliminary inquiry on behalf of the petitioner was completed, the Minister was not given a clean chit. It was argued that the case should be ordered for a direct hearing. The case came up for hearing before Chief Justice Sanjay Banerjee, Justice Senthilkumar and Ramamurthy, Advocate Suresh, said a direct inquiry should be held into the case as a lot of evidence and documents had to be filed.
As the regime changed, he demanded that the trial be adjourned. Senior advocate Mukul Rothaki, appearing for SP Velumani, has already appointed a special officer to look into the matter. He said the case was not suitable for trial as the government had accepted the investigation report. Advocate General R Shanmugasundar appeared for the government and stated that there was malpractice in the auditor's report and hence the decision of the government is to be reviewed after closing the case related to this abuse. He said the first information report would be filed after the hearing. The judges, who heard all the arguments, adjourned the hearing for 8 weeks.
