Coimbatore: The Minister for Forests in Tamil Nadu, K Ramachandran honoured the District administration of Nilgiris and NGOs on Monday for ensuring complete vaccination of tribals in the district.
The Nilgiris district administration and its Health Department roped in NGOs to vaccinate the vulnerable community of the hills against Covid-19.
The Nilgiris administration has been lauded for setting an example and leading the way in effectively creating awareness and vaccinating tribals who were wary and feared vaccination owing to the misinformation that is circulated in the social media. “The district administration roped in many NGOs like Nilgiris Wayanad Tribal Welfare Association and The Banyan etc as the NGOs and its volunteers work closely with tribals and understand them. Thus, we were able to communicate with the tribals and educate them on the importance of vaccines, which helped in vaccinating everybody against Covid-19," opined a volunteer on the program.
The Health Department achieved 100 percent vaccination in the Nilgiris by vaccinating all tribals and tea plantation workers including accessing the remote locations by convincing the local people who were initially hesitant about getting vaccinated. In honour of the hard work put in by the district administration and the NGOs, the Forest Minister, K Ramachandran honoured them with shields and badges since Nilgiris now is the only district in Tamil Nadu that has ensured complete vaccination especially for tribals.
