Coimbatore: Despite good market demand, Steep price hike of raw materials is hitting us hard says, Industrialists. In spite of the 'Covid-19' second wave outbreak, the market for compressors are quite good.
Coimbatore Compressor Industries Association (COCIA), President, M.Raveendran said, “Industrial city Coimbatore is well known for Air Compressor manufacturing both at the national and international level. There are 80 manufacturer's and 210 spares, accessories Manufacturing industries functioning across the district.

More than 5,000 people are directly employed and 10,000 people indirectly employed in this sector. Compressors are used in all industries. It is one of the most essential products similar to electric generator.
The Compressor usage is seen in many places starting from vehicles air filling stations, painting works, power looms, knitting machines, printing press, hospitals and various other places. Compressor manufacturing industries are seen only in two states in India, TamilNadu (Coimbatore) and Gujarat (Rajkot, Ahmedabad).
The industries at Coimbatore cater 70% of the Compressor needs across the nation. Remaining 30% needs is fulfilled by the industries functioning in Gujarat.
Compressors manufactured at Coimbatore are exported to 20 African countries and Latin American countries. Post pandemic outbreak the market did not get affected. In fact the market continues to be so good as we continue to receive more job orders. Steep price hike of raw materials is the big issue the manufacturers are facing. Also the Crude oil price increase is having an impact in Compressor manufacturing process. We cannot keep changing the products price as the raw materials price increase. We request the central government to take steps which ensure raw materials are available at reasonable cost."
"Every year more than Rs 1,000 crore value business takes place in Coimbatore. At present Reciprocating compressors (Normal type compressors which function with more sound) are only mosty manufactured. Screw type Compressors are the advanced product which is currenly manufactured only by very big industries such as ELGi in Coimbatore and Kirloskar in North India and many other Multi National Companies."
"There are many advantages of the Screw type Compressors such as energy savings, more efficiency, low noise etc. We have already started woking to establish a cluster in Coimbatore with governments help which would help more industries to start manufacturing Screw type compressors in a big way. The screw type compressors are only used in hospital premises where oxygen generation plants are established. Since the need for establishing oxygen generation plants has increased due to pandemic outbreak, we hope both the central and state governments will help us to start manufacturing screw type air compressors which would be very helpful for generating oxygen at various places across the nation."
