National Plastic Surgery Day which is being celebrated as World Plastic Surgery Day is the brainchild of Coimbatore-based plastic surgeon, Dr. S Raja Sabapathy.
Coimbatore: Taking over as President of the Association of Plastic Surgeons of India in 2011, Coimbatore-based Dr. S Raja Sabapathy, Plastic Surgeon at Ganga Hospital declared July 15 as National Plastic Surgery Day. After a decade, the day is now being celebrated as World Plastic Surgery Day.
The decision to dedicate July 15 as World Plastic Surgery Day comes after the serving President of the Association of Plastic Surgeons of India (APSI) Dr. Rakesh Khazanchi spoke about the National Plastic Surgery Day’s success in India at the World Council of Leaders. Presidents of all National Associations are members of this Association. It was then agreed to celebrate July 15 as World Plastic Surgery Day.
To commemorate National Plastic Surgery Day, plastic surgeons across the country committed to performing one surgery free of cost on one needy patient. This became a tradition that was religiously followed at a pan-India level, year after year. The novel initiative was discussed when Presidents of Plastic Surgery Associations of various countries came together at a meeting that was organized by the American Society for Plastic Surgery recently and what followed is history.
Starting this year onward, the world will celebrate 15 July as World Plastic Surgery Day, which is the brainchild of Coimbatore-based plastic surgeon, Dr. S Raja Sabapathy.
