Coimbatore: In a bid to bring down the fatality rate due to non-communicable diseases in the state to 50 percent, the Tamil Nadu government launched a doorstep treatment under the Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam scheme.

Under this scheme where the clinics will be taken to the homes of residents in the State, it is estimated that people with complaints like renal failure will be treated.

Tamil Nadu is looking to launch a screening program in the next 10 days where people with high blood sugar and pressure will be monitored routinely by nurses and paramedic staff, while undergoing treatment in their homes. Sources say that those diagnosed with BP or diabetes under the scheme will have to undergo screening and consultation at the primary health care centres, followed by treatment at their doorsteps. BP apparatus, glucometers and other equipment required for the treatment process will be carried by nurses and paramedics to the homes of the patients.

The State reports at least 5 lakh deaths due to these non-communicable diseases and to cut that down to half, the Government has initiated this step. Besides providing diet and physiotherapy to patients, peritoneal dialysis will also be given to those with chronic kidney disease.

Sources in the District Health Department say that the drive is expected to be launched soon and added that they have already begun tracing people with non-communicable diseases in the rural areas with the help of volunteers, which they say will help in identifying and curing them.
