Coimbatore: The Forest Department conducted a public awareness rally on human-animal conflict prevention at the Coimbatore - Mettupalayam.
Wild elephants roam in large numbers in forest areas including Mettupalayam Sirumugai in Coimbatore district. Especially in Mettupalayam, in Ooty and Kotagiri wild elephants roam in large numbers and then migrate from one area to another by crossing the roads.
The elephants sometimes move into the farms and rural areas which may be adjacent to the forest. When the elephants leave the forest some people try to chase the elephants away by themselves. Some try bursting firecrackers in an attempt to chase elephants by themselves without informing the forest department. This causes human-elephant conflict. Elephants cross the Ooty- Coonoor Road at Mettupalayam and there are onlookers who are present there.
Due to this, elephants get distracted and infiltrate agricultural lands, damaging crops. The Forest Department asked the public not to try to chase away the elephant if the elephants come into the villages and in their farm. The Forest Department and the Police today held a joint public awareness rally demanding the public to inform the Forest Department. Awareness rallies were also held in villages like Mettupalayam Ooty Road, Ammapalayam located on Kotagiri Road and Kurumbanur where there were many elephants.
The forest department also advised the public not to attempt chasing away elephants by bursting firecrackers and instead inform about elephants movements to the forest department. More than 50 forest officials and policemen took part in the rally and raised awareness
