Chief Minister M K Stalin has announced that women can travel in ordinary fare government buses operating in urban areas of Tamil Nadu, free of charge. Subsequently, most of the women were allowed to travel free on Government buses.

Due to the lockdown imposed in Coimbatore district owing to the spread of Covid-19, public transport was suspended from April 22. Currently, Government buses have been operating in Coimbatore district since relaxations were announced by the Tamil Nadu government with the decline in Covid-19 cases.

Women have been the chief beneficiaries having been allowed free travel on urban and ordinary buses plying in Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Tirupur and Erode districts under the Coimbatore division. Free tickets have been issued to women since last Monday to facilitate the number of women travelling free of charge.

A Coimbatore Divisional Officer of the State Transport Corporation stated that there are a total of 1,012 Government buses in Coimbatore district. "Of this, only 740 buses are currently operating per day. 310 buses ply from Coimbatore to Salem, Tirupur, Karur, Madurai, Sathy and Erode. Of the remaining 430 city buses, 280 are regular buses and 150 are red luxury buses. Women have to pay a fare to travel in a luxury bus. They can travel for free on regular fare buses.

In Coimbatore, toll-free buses are marked with a women-free sticker on buses to identify them easily. 700 to 800 women travel daily on a regular bus in Coimbatore, free of charge. Two lakh women travel on 280 buses in a day, free of charge," he added.
