Coimbatore: More than 30,000 workers are employed in tea estates in Valparai, Coimbatore district.

The wage agreement, which is renewed every three years, was finalized last month. Tea plantation managements and unions on behalf of workers usually draft the new contract. The consultative meeting of the Tholilsanga Kootamaippu was held in a private hall in Valparai.

The meeting was chaired by Kozhikadai Ganesan, president of the Thozhilsanga Kootamaippu. At the meeting it was demanded that the basic salary of the workers be 500 rupees and 200 rupees plus the minimum wage of 700 rupees for staff and supervisors. Following this, it was decided that all trade union executives, led by Kozhikadai Ganesan, the leader of theThozhilsangaKootamaippu, would meet the Chief Minister and the Minister of Industry in person and submit a petition.
