Coimbatore: For many years, the approximately 3.5-kilometer stretch canal that connects River Noyyal in Tiruppur with Mooli Kulam Lake in Mannarai area has been unclean and its water unfit for use.

However, thanks to the efforts of various non-profit organizations, the stretch is better than what it was earlier. With the support of the newly appointed Tiruppur Corporation Commissioner Kranthi Kumar Pati, the stretch is all set to get a facelift. The source who is familiar with the developments shared with SimpliCity that a team of officials under the leadership of the Commissioner is preparing a blueprint to bring in a transformation to this and around the area.

It all started in 2014 when a non-profit organization called Veergal, took up the responsibility of ensuring that the canal is clean from the waste that was dumped in it. During the following year, a series of cleaning drives were initiated and the canal was cleaned of the debris that was dumped for several decades. A group of college students, a majority of them being men, participated in many cleaning drives. Members of the NGO funded the cleaning drives with money from their pocket and savings. We are told that funds running into several crores of rupees have been used in the various clean-up drives.

In 2017, the team from NGO Vanathukal Tirupur joined hands with ngo Veergal to clean the entire stretch of canal from River Noyyal in Tiruppur with Mooli Kulam Lake in Mannarai area. Sapling planting activity was also successfully done. A variety of sapling species are planted in the 26.5 acre land around the Mooli Kulam Lake. The team from the Environmentalist Foundation of India helped clean the weeds from the stretch and also contributed to strengthening the bunds.

The team from Veergal does not wish to give up on the canal cleaning activity. They expressed their concern that sewage is making its way into the water from three places. One priority is to work on a feasible plan to prevent this and ensure that the water is free from dirt. Moreover, the team is more than happy as the newly appointed Tiruppur Corporation Commissioner, within a couple of days after assuming office, visited the site, acknowledging the request of the ngo. Team Veergal has one more reason to celebrate as Kranthi Kumar Pati has committed to bringing in a transformation in the area.

As part of the agenda is to remove the 300 odd homes that are built on encroached lands in and around the area. The Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board has plans to relocate the residents who are dwelling there. A source who is familiar with the lake beautification developments and the canal cleanup project informed SimpliCity that also on the cards is to create a walking, jogging, and cycling track, besides making a park and a sit-out in the vicinity.
