Coimbatore: The Chennai Meteorological Department has forecast thunderstorms in 10 districts, including Nilgiris and Coimbatore, due to low pressure in the northwestern Bay of Bengal.
The Chennai Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rains for four consecutive days in the Western Ghats, including the Nilgiris, Coimbatore and Theni. A low pressure area has formed in the Midwest and the adjoining northwestern Bay of Bengal, northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha. The southwest monsoon has intensified in Tamil Nadu.
The Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts will receive heavy to very heavy rains with thunder and lightning on Monday. Dindigul and Tenkasi districts along the Western Ghats will receive moderate rainfall. The Nilgiris will receive heavy to very heavy rains on Tuesday. Heavy rains in Coimbatore and Theni districts are also forecast.
Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari and Tirupur districts are likely to receive moderate rainfall. The Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts will receive heavy rains for the next three days. The sky will be overcast in Chennai and there will be light rain in some places. As of Sunday morning, maximum rainfall of 10 cm was recorded at Chinnakallar in Tamil Nadu, in 24 hours. Avalanche received 9 mm rain, Sholayar 8 mm, Valparai 7 mm, Bandalur 6 mm, Nilgiris 3 mm, Gummidipoondi, Periyar, Pechipparai 2mm, Tenkasi, Ambai, Trichy and Papanasam received 1 cm rain.
Strong winds of upto 50 kmph are expected in Kumarikkad, Gulf of Mannar and South Bengal till tomorrow. Strong winds of upto 50 kmph are expected in the southwestern and central western Arabian Sea areas till July 15. Fishermen have been warned not to go into these areas.
