The new engine for the Nilgiris Mountain Railway is modelled on the Nilgiris steam locomotive numbered 37384, which has been in operation since 1918. For the past two years, it was being manufactured at the Trichy Ponmalai workshop on domestic technology.
Work on the new engine which is valued at Rs 8.8 crores is nearing completion. The key feature of the new locomotive is that out of the 3,600 parts of the new engine, 1,200 parts are made in Ponmalai. A test run with this new engine is expected to take place soon.
