Intensive surveillance is being carried out by police on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border next to Pollachi following threat of Zika virus from Kerala. Public demand to set up a medical team.
Coimbatore: Fresh Covid-19 cases have been reported in Kerala in the past few days. Meanwhile, more than 15 people have been admitted to hospitals due to the spread of the Zika virus. With many people travelling from Kerala to Tamil Nadu daily, especially into Coimbatore district, police surveillance was intensified at the district boundaries on the orders of the Coimbatore District Collector as a measure to prevent the spread of Zika virus in Tamil Nadu.
After Pollachi, there are 7 routes into Tamil Nadu including Gopalapuram, Govindapuram, Meenatchipuram and Nadupuni. Police on these routes are already engaged in vehicle inspections as a Covid-19 prevention measure. Also, vehicles from Kerala are allowed into Tamil Nadu only if they have prior e-registration.
Panchayat staff are also conducting audits. As the spread of Zika virus in Kerala is on the rise, public in Coimbatoe district are demanding the district administration to set up medical teams in the border areas of Tamil Nadu and Kerala to systematically screen people from Kerala.
