There are more than 50 tea estates in Valparai, Coimbatore district. The tea estates employ more than 30,000 workers and are paid a five-year wage. Accordingly, the contract was terminated on the 30th. The tea estate management has not yet called the unions and held any talks on a new agreement. The meeting was held last week on behalf of the Federation of Tea Plantation Workers' Unions. At the conclusion of the meeting it was demanded that the management should immediately call the trade unions and hold talks. Also, it was decided to hold a demonstration in front of each tea estate management office from the eighth day in case of mishap.
