There are over 50,000 tea plantation workers in the Valparai area of Coimbatore district. It has 60 estates as small and big landholdings. Currently the tea plantation workers have their union leaders represented In the interest of the workers as union leaders to talk to the management and provide them with the basic facilities they need. Union leaders are also in talks to negotiate a pay rise.
In the past, pay rises were negotiated every three years. Currently 3 years has been changed to 4 years. They will set a minimum wage for tea plantation workers and raise their wages.
Leaders of Tamil Nadu level as trade union leaders in tea plantation companies in Valparai, Nilgiris, Yercaud, Manjolai, Meghamalai in Tamil Nadu talk to the estate management and hold a dialogue. These salary negotiations will be concluded by the officer through the Government-led Labor Welfare Department.
On July 1, 2016, the minimum wage was 102 rupees and the basic wage increase was 346 rupees. As the wage agreement expires on July 1, 2021, workers will be required by union leaders to pay a minimum wage of 400 rupees. The Panjapadi is expected to cost more than 200 rupees, with the average worker expected to earn between 600 and 700 rupees a day.
Similarly, in the Valparai area at present the estate management has not invited the union leaders for this salary negotiation and they have assured that they will protest against the estate management. The DMK union, led by union leader Ameedhu, in front of the Mahavir Management High forest Estate office in Valparai, Leaders of trade unions such as the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal, the Communist Party of India, the Congress Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party staged a protest in front of the estate office.
Moreover, the tea estate workers' demand is that the estate management call for wage negotiations and hold a minimum wage of 600 rupees for the tea plantation workers without holding a demonstration before the various estate offices.
