Public fear increased risk of Covid-19 infection from people entering the city from Kerala to buy alcohol since liquor stores have reopened in Coimbatore
Coimbatore: With the Tamil Nadu Government granting additional concessions to open liquor shops and jewellery shops in Coimbatore district since Covid-19 cases have been curbed, tipplers from Kerala have begun flocking to Coimbatore since liquor shops have reopened.
The Government of Kerala has imposed strict lockdown on the people of Palakkad district and ensured all liquor stores are closed in Palakkad district. There are about six routes between Pollachi and Palakkad on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border and hence those in Kerala who wish to buy liquor can easily enter Tamil Nadu.
Locals and Coimbatore district administration officials are concerned that this could lead to the risk of the district being vulnerable to Covid-19 infection again. With this in mind, the public has demanded that security be strengthened on these six-lane routes connecting the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala to prevent the spread of Covid-19, and by intensifying inspections on all vehicles.
