A meeting of the Tamil Nadu Farmers 'Association was held at Denkanikottai on Farmers' Day. State Secretary Konappan and Joint Secretary Venkatesh presided at the meeting where tributes were paid to the farmers who lost their lives in the protest for free electricity from 1970 to 1980.
The association demanded that pensions should be provided to farmers over 60 years of age, free electricity scheme should be continued by the Central and State Governments and nationalized banks should waive agricultural loans. Various resolutions were passed including the need to prevent agricultural lands from being rampaged by wildlife. Among those present were West District Chairman Mariappan, Deputy Chairman Subramanian and East Chairman Chinnaswamy.
