Prof Murugan, Registrar of Bharathiar University criticised for joining BJP at Vice Chancellor's office

Coimbatore: Professor Murugan, Registrar at Coimbatore Bharathiar University, was controversially joined the BJP at the Vice-chancellor's.

The BJP's influence in higher education has increased. Educators are urging the Tamil Nadu government to take action. There was controversy after a photo ofMurugan, who was a registrar at Bharathiar University in Coimbatore, joining the BJP was released in the Vice Chancellor's room. Professor Murugan was the Registrar at Bharathiar University in Coimbatore. He was also the Head of the Department of Zoology at Bharathiar University. Murugan retired on June 30. On the same day, it was reported that Murugan had joined the BJP.

It was reported that Murugan had joined the BJP in the presence of BJP state youth secretary Dr Preethi Lakshmi and state media secretary Sabari Girish. A photo of Dr. Preethi Lakshmi and Sabari Girish handing over a BJP membership card to Professor Murugan in the waiting room for the Vice Chancellor's office at the Bharathiar University was released.

BJP state youth secretary Dr Preethi Lakshmi had posted this on her social media page. Not only did the retired professor join the political party on the same day, but there was a complaint that Murugan had joined the BJP in the waiting room of the Vice Chancellor's office.

Dr. Preethi deleted the post after many people questioned on social media about the incident saying that it was a mistake for the professor to join the BJP in the waiting room of the Vice Chancellor's office. Also, it is very wrong for a professor to join a political party on the same day he retires. Criticisms arose that it was illegal for a political party to hold a meeting in the vice-chancellor's room. Moreover, academics called for action against Professor Murugan.

Responding to a media query on the controversial incident, Bharathiar University Vice Chancellor Kaliraj said, “I was not at the university on the day of the incident. I went to Chennai on June 30 for a ministerial review meeting. The BJP members came to meet me that day out of respect. I had asked to meet the registrar in my absence. Subsequently, they met and talked to Murugan. The photo was taken in the waiting room to meet the Vice Chancellor.

He added, "Then they wrote down the number on a card in Murugan's hand and took the photo. When I asked Murugan about this incident, he said he had handed back the party member ID card. He says he left the party too. It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post. At the same time, there does not appear to be a political motive behind the incident. It happened coincidentally. I will see to it that this does not happen in the future.”

Responding to a media query about joining the BJP in the waiting room of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Murugan said, “I do not deny that this incident took place. I was the one who expressed my desire to join the BJP. The incident being photographed in the Vice Chancellor's office was by accident. But, I still want to continue my academic work for 10 years. So, I returned the BJP membership card the next day. I have also sent an email to the BJP headquarters."
