Karthikeya Sivasenapathy of DMK Environment Wing inspects waterbodies in Coimbatore.
Coimbatore: On behalf of the DMK Environment Wing, under the leadership of its State Secretary Karthikeya Sivasenapathy, carried out research work on various ponds located in the Coimbatore city area.

"We promise to ensure the protection of Coimbatore's ponds and water resources, as stated by Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, during his pre-election campaign 'Vidiyalai Nokki' and through the 'Ungal Thoguthiyil Stalin' grievance program.

On behalf of the Environmental Team of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, along with members of the Environmental Wing, the party members and NGOs from Coimbatore surveyed the main ponds of Coimbatore such as Valankulam, Kurichikulam, Periya Kulam, Selvapuram Kulam and Thadagam Kulam. This shows that during the last 10 years of AIADMK rule, most of the ponds have been occupied and the area of the pond has shrunk drastically and in many places the waste water has been discharged directly into the ponds without being treated.

It has also been found that pond ecosystems are severely affected by unnecessary work, including laying concrete on the shores that disturbs biodiversity in the ponds. While the above is a major problem, there are still many issues that need to be addressed. At the request of NGOs and the public in Coimbatore, the ponds were inspected and a report was submitted to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Minister of Urban Development KN Nehru, Minister of Public Works EV Velu and the concerned Ministers of the concerned Department for Biosynthesis. Documentation will be made to carry out the development projects done.
Environment wing state secretaries Manisunder, Narayanamurthy, Usilampatti Arun, Senthilkumar, party secretaries, administrators and social activists were present during the inspection.
