I will consult with Chief Minister on setting up a cricket ground in Coimbatore: Sports Minister Meyyanathan
Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Environment and Youth Welfare and Sports Minister Meyyanathan visited the Nehru Indoor Stadium, which was inaugurated 47 years ago by Kalaignar Karunanidhi.
Later, he inspected the ongoing work to set up a hockey field in the RS Puram, Coimbatore.
Sports Department District Officer Ravichandran welcomed the Minister with a bouquet.
The Minister then spoke to the athletes who were there and listened to their needs and grievances. Later, he provided nutritious rice and sports clothes to the poor and simple sports students who are financially backward
He later told reporters that he has been working to prioritize athletes and promote their skills. He also said that action would be taken to bring to the notice of the Chief Minister about the setting up of a cricket stadium in Coimbatore.
"It has been 47 years since the foundation stone was laid and built by the former Chief Minister. The Nehru Stadium has been in a state of disrepair for the last 10 years. It will be taken to the notice of the Chief Minister and said that steps would be taken to transform it into a world class stadium. All the announcements of former minister SP Velumani are empty promises. This Nehru Stadium is a testament to the fact that the sports sector has not improved in the last 10 years ".
Following this, Minister Meyyanathan attended a consultative meeting on Environmental Climate Change and Environmental Improvement at the Coimbatore District Collectorate, where he inspected and consulted with officials of the Pollution Control Board and Pollution Control Board officials, including the District Collector, on the southwest monsoon, water bodies and environmental pollution.
