Nilgiris District Collector receives award from Tamil Nadu CM for 100 percent inoculation of tribals in Nilgiris

Coimbatore: The Government of Tamil Nadu presented an award to the Nilgiris District Collector, Innocent Divya for achieving 100 percent vaccination of tribals against Covid-19. The Chief Minister, M K Stalin presented the award in Chennai on July 1, lauding the efforts of the District Collector.

The second wave of Covid-19 adversely affected the residents of Nilgiris, much more than the first wave. Intensive efforts were made over the last 15 days to vaccinate all tribals in Nilgiris against Covid-19. The five main indigenous tribes of Nilgiris are the Irula, Badaga, Toda, Kota and Kurumba.

Most tribes were reluctant to be vaccinated due to a lack of awareness about the Covid vaccine. To alleviate their fears, the Nilgiris administration intensified awareness drives about the vaccine. Health officials visited the homes of these indigenous tribals and vaccinated them daily.

It is reported that many of the tribals who saw the health workers enter their hamlets, ran away. But with the persuasion of the health officials, all the tribals over the age of 18 have been vaccinated as of July 1. This makes Nilgiris the first district in the country to ensure 100 percent vaccination against Covid-19 among all tribals.

Out of a total of 27,500 tribals in the Nilgiris district, 21,800 are over 18 years of age and all have been vaccinated thus far according to the Nilgiris district administration.
