Encroachment of public pathway issue: National Commission for the Welfare of Scheduled Caste summons Coimbatore District Collector

National Commission for the Welfare of Scheduled Caste has summoned Coimbatore District Collector to submit report on encroachment of public pathway in Kamarajapuram.



Coimbatore: The National Commission for the Welfare of the Scheduled Caste has sent a notice to the Coimbatore District Collector to reply within 15 days regarding an alleged encroachment of a public pathway in Kamarajapuram, Coimbatore.



The alleged encroachment in Kamarajapuram area of Coimbatore by a private company has been preventing the residents including sanitary workers of the area use the public pathway, for many years. Residents of the area had also accused an AIADMK functionary of erecting an untouchability wall and setting up a tent on the road there for the past three years, thereby obstructing them using the public road. Due to the encroachment, the residents had to go around 2 km to connect to the other part of the road.

The irked residents who have been fighting for the same over several years now, allegetheir grievance had fallen in deaf ears. Not losing hope, the residents had recentlyhighlighted their plight to the CMO cell, National Commission for the Welfare of the Scheduled castes, District Collector and the Corporation Commissioner seeking immediate redressal.

In a major development, the National Commission for the Welfare of the Scheduled castes has summoned the Coimbatore Collector to respond within 15 days in connection with the allegedencroachment.

In its letter dated June 24, the Commission stated that "Whereas a Petition/Complaint/Information has been received by the National Commission for Scheduled Castes fram Shri. P.Raman and other Public, Kamarajapuram, Coimbatore dated 17.6.2021 as enclosed and the Commission has decided to investigate/inquire Into the matter in PUA of the powers conferred upon it under Article 338 of the Constitution of India.

You are hereby requested to submit the facts and information and the action taken on the allegation/ matters to the undersigned within 15 days dime from the date of receipt of this notice cither by post or in person or by any other means of communication.

Please take notice that in case (he Commission does not receive reply from you within the stipulated time, the Commission may exercise the powers of Civil Courts conferred on it under Article 338 of the Constitution and issue summons for your appearance in person or by a representative before the Commission."
