Shanmugam hails from the Chinnampathy tribal village in the Mavuthampathy panchayat of Coimbatore district. His daughter is Sandhya. For the past one and a half years, the Corona period curfew has made it impossible for students in the area to study due to the lack of facilities such as internet and internet.
At this point, Sandhya, the first graduate in the village, started taking special classes for boys and girls in the Chinnampathy tribal village. As the school functioned, she took special classes from 8 to 12 in the morning and from 3 to 6 in the evening. In this situation, the District Collector who came to know about this met her in person and congratulated him.
Following the news that young Sandhya would be nominated for the ‘Kalpana Chawla’ award, the villagers congratulated her. Mavuthampathy panchayat leader Gomati Senthilkumar said that he would meet Sandhya in person and make necessary arrangements to conduct the lesson.
Commenting on her selection for the award, Sandhya said, "I am very encouraged by this announcement and the children from tribal villages who are unable to go to school are eager to get an education."
