District Collector lauds 'Kalpana Chawla' awardee Sandhya in person for educating tribal children in Coimbatore


Coimbatore: The 'Kalpana Chawla Award' is to be awarded this year to a college student Sandhya from Coimbatore for her work among tribal children in Madukkarai, Coimbatore.

Chinnampathy is a tribal village in the Mavuthampathy Panchayat under the Madukkarai Union which is inhabited by 82 tribal families. Sandhya, daughter of Shanmugam who lives in the area is the first graduate of the village and has been teaching over 20 boys and girls in the area since 2017, from Classes 1-8.

Sandhya's school is her home which s currently being built. When the news of her being awarded the Kalpana Chawla award was published in the newspapers, District Collector Sameeran visited Sandhya's home on Tuesday. He chatted with Sandhya about her studies, interest in teaching and the construction work of the house.

While congratulating Sandhya, District Collector Sameeran also presented her with five books, including Thirukkural. He also said that the 'Kalpana Chawla Award' would be presented to her on Independence Day this year. Sandhya was also appreciated by Panchayat leader Gomati, her husband Senthilkumar and other ward members.
